ENVIRONMENT RECEIVES TOP PRIORITY IN RICE RESEARCH

Eight of the funded projects directly concern reduced escape of materials from rice fields: Short-statured varieties will leave less straw. Long-term stubble studies consider returning at least part of the residue to the soil. Rice straw as a feed for livestock is a possibility. Burning rice stubble with half as much smoke appears feasible. Liquids and solids applied by air already have but minimal drift. New procedures should result from experiments on the fate in water and soil of chemicals applied to rice fields.

Thus, ecology is an important aspect of much of the work reported herein. The rice industry, too, wants a high-quality environment for the rapidly urbanizing great valley.
