HULL USES ARE BEING STUDIEDThe most practical-seeming were picked from 15 suggestions made over decades. Tests sorted out the four most promising for further study. Recoverable silica content of rice hulls is 70 percent. A report is due soon on possibilities of using hulls in cement, architectural board, lime-silicate structural materials, and sodium silicate. Composition, properties, and uses will be covered in a forthcoming book: "Rice: Chemistry and Technology." FIELD HULLING AS PART OF HARVEST IS GETTING PRELIMINARY STUDYHull disposal costs the California rice industry about $1.5 million yearly. What about dehulling rice as part of the harvest operation? So far: rubber-roll hullers show a strong potential for field-hulling wet rice. Hulling is best at lower moisture content; some varieties hull easier than others. Protection of rice quality will require field-hulled rice to get a different postharvest handling from paddy rice.
