ENVIRONMENT RECEIVES PRIORITY IN RICE RESEARCH

Several of the funded projects directly concern reduced escape of materials from rice fields: Short-statured varieties will leave less straw. Long-term stubble studies consider returning at least part of the residue to the soil. Rice straw as feed is a possibility. Reducing smoke in stubble burning is now possible. Drift of liquids and solids applied from the air is now minimal. New procedures should result from experiments on the fate in water and soil of chemicals applied to rice fields.
