Nowcasting, Chico, CA

Objectives

The objectives of the Nowcasting program are to gather atmospheric data useful for determining conditions favorable for burning rice straw without causing serious adverse air pollution and to provide the required daily atmospheric data for conducting an Agricultural Burning Test Program.

In 1983, the following improvements in daily operating procedures were made:

  •  Nowcasting/Air Resources Board/County Office distribution was moved to a higher speed communications system
  • North/south acreage-shift formula was refined and its implementation was used to good effect
  • County computer systems were upgraded to increase data storage capacity and to improve printing capabilities
  • County/grower communications were improved
  • Meteorological coordination for timing burning allocations on superior ventilation days was improved

The Air Resources Board, after appropriate public hearings, agreed to adopt the Rice Research Board sponsored experimental procedures.

The agrichemical industry has been informed of the results of the Rice Research Board sponsored experiments in light-wind forecasting, with the view that demonstration of the effectiveness of these techniques in the spring and summer season could benefit both their industry and production agriculture in California - once practitioners become educated about their use and credibility.
