Rice fields in the winter are quite places. No rice is growing there. Instead, many growers flood their fields with a few inches of water to help the remaining straw decompose. This water and the food available attracts birds that frequent the Pacific Flyway and migrate through this area. If you look carefully, you will see four birds in the foreground of the large picture and many birds in the sky. Often you can see thousands of birds gathered in a field.
